ChatGPT Added Try-On. Shoppers Still Don't Know Their Size.
On 1 October 2026, ChatGPT put Try On on clothing and accessory listings. Upload a selfie or a full-body photo. See the garment on you. TechCrunch wrote it up the same day. It runs on ChatGPT Images 2.5, web and mobile.
That is a look tool inside someone else’s app. OpenAI says the images do not guarantee fit or size. Shoppers are told to check the merchant’s measurements, product details, and return policy.
So the headline is backwards. ChatGPT did not solve dressing. It made will it suit me? easier to ask in ChatGPT. Will it fit me? is still your Size Chart, on the page where they pay.

Two questions, one of them missing
Every fashion purchase hangs on two independent questions.
Will it suit me? Visual. A try-on on the shopper’s own photo.
Will it fit me? Numeric. A Size Chart, and a size from height and weight.
A dress that looks right can still be the wrong size. A chest that matches the row can still look wrong. ChatGPT’s Try On is the first question, in ChatGPT. It does not recommend S or M. It does not read your table. It does not know if a cell is a body measurement or a garment laid flat.

What actually launched (and what did not)
Shoppers in ChatGPT can tap Try On on a clothing or accessory listing, reuse a saved reference photo, upload a screenshot from any store, and save looks to a Library.
Shopify merchants do not opt in. OpenAI already pulls products through Shopify Catalog. No extra feed. Whether a SKU gets Try On is ChatGPT’s choice.
Instant Checkout in ChatGPT launched in late 2025. OpenAI stepped away in March 2026: the first version “did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide.” Discovery stays in ChatGPT. Payment happens on the merchant’s site or app. Shopify has said the same.
The path is: try looks in the chat, then land on your product page to buy. If that page cannot show the item on them, and cannot name a size without a tape, the ChatGPT preview dies on contact.
You do not see the ChatGPT render in analytics. In the same thread, ChatGPT can suggest a similar item from another store.
The purchase is still a size decision
Shopify’s own data: shoppers who can visualize products convert up to 94% better. Source: Shopify blog “3D Ecommerce” and changelog, 11 May 2022. That number is the category of visualization, not AI Frame, and it is about the page they buy on - not the chat they left.
Zalando: items with size advice had 10% fewer size-related returns than similar items without it. Size advice is a table and a recommendation, not a generated selfie.
ChatGPT can start the look. Only your product page can finish look and fit, on the product they actually buy.
What to put on the product page
Do not clone ChatGPT. Put both answers where the order happens. Make each reachable without the other. Most shoppers never start a try-on. If sizing only lives inside a photo flow, the size decision happens without you.
On a Shopify product page set up for this:
-
Try On on the first product image. One photo, consent checkbox, privacy link, AI-generated label, timed deletion. Add to cart from the result.
-
Size Chart as a text link next to Size. No photo. Five steps.
- Estimate my size above Add to cart (Starter+). Height, weight, gender; age optional. Chest, waist, hip from those numbers — never from the photo. Then Your size.

What this does not change
ChatGPT will not replace the product page. Instant Checkout already tested that.
It will raise the floor. Once someone has seen clothes on themselves in a chat, a flat packshot looks unfinished. Same curve as reviews: novelty, advantage, expectation.
It will not answer size. Fit is garment minus body. Ease, stretch, body vs garment still live in your chart. A selfie is not a tape measure.
It will not give you the shopper’s photo. If they try on in ChatGPT, that image never hits your store.
Swimwear: ChatGPT’s rules are theirs. On AI Frame, swimwear Size Charts work; Virtual Try-On does not render swimwear. Swimwear charts.
This week
- Confirm Size Chart sits next to Size with no try-on required.
- Confirm Try On sits on the first product image, not next to Add to cart. Shoppers from ChatGPT already saw a look. Let them tap the same garment on your photo, then add to cart.
- On Starter, turn on Estimate my size. That is everyone who will not upload - which is most people, and every gifter.
- Do not buy a ChatGPT ranking. You cannot. Keep titles, sizes, and availability honest in Shopify so Catalog stays honest. Win the click-through.

Questions
Does ChatGPT have Virtual Try-On?
Yes, since 1 October 2026, on clothing and accessory listings in ChatGPT shopping. OpenAI: the result does not guarantee fit or size.
Can I put ChatGPT’s try-on on Shopify?
No. On-site try-on is a storefront app. AI Frame also puts Size Chart and Estimate my size on the same page.
Can they buy inside ChatGPT?
OpenAI moved away from Instant Checkout in March 2026. Payment is on your site or app.
Will my products appear?
Shopify Catalog already feeds Shopify merchants. You cannot pay for a Try On button.
Should I turn my try-on off?
No. ChatGPT is browsing. Yours is buying — and yours can answer size.
